On December 5, 1999, the “Mallard Fillmore” comic strip by Bruce Tinsley (©1999 by King Features Syndicate, Inc.) featured the main character watching the Oprah Winfrey Show on television. A guest on that program is saying through the progressive frames of the strip, “You know what I mean, Oprah . . . the screenwriters get hold of my book, then the producer and director start in with the changes and glitz and special effects. . . and there’s so much marketing and P.R. to make it appeal to everybody and make lots of money, that eventually I can’t recognize my own story anymore!”
Mallard Fillmore turns to face us as he thinks, “I wonder if that’s how God feels about Christmas?”
Good question. In all the glitz and special effects, marketing and P.R., does the finished product look anything like God intended?
Another good question would be “What can I do in my own personal world to change my Christmas to look more like what God may have intended?”
Christmas is indeed something to celebrate! But let us make sure that our celebrations look like something which honors Him.
