We have laughed at Peanuts comic strips for many years. One of many people is one which came out just before Thanksgiving one year. Lucy was feeling sorry for herself and she complained, “My life is a drag. I’m completely fed up. I’ve never felt so low in my life.”
Linus, her little brother, was listening and tried to encourage her. He said, “Lucy, when you’re in a mood like this, you should try to think of things you have to be thankful for; in other words, count your blessings.”
Lucy responded, “Ha! That’s a good one! I could count my blessings on one finger! I’ve never had anything and I never will have anything. I don’t get half the breaks that other people do. Nothing ever goes right for me! And you talk about counting blessings! You talk about being thankful! What do I have to be thankful for?”
Linus said, “Well, for one thing, you have a little brother who loves you.”
Lucy grabbed and hugged her little brother Linus as she cried tears of joy. Linus said, “Every now and then, I say the right thing.”
In our lives sometimes we feel exactly the way Lucy did. We may have been showered with blessings, yet when we have a spell when nothing seems to be going right we forget all those things God has done for us.
During those spells, let us remember that we do indeed have much for which we should be thankful. For Linus, saying the right thing meant reminding his sister that he loved her.
For us, saying the right thing means never forgetting all the amazing blessings God has given us. Let’s say the right thing this Thanksgiving: “Thank You, Lord!”
